Proto ColorGen

Free browser app that builds the source material for a blockout: color palettes, UV checker maps, and prototype grid textures. It's the companion to Proto Color — what you make here exports as PNG or JSON and imports straight into the Blender add-on.

Try it right now

It's live at colorgen.trinhlabs.com — free, no install, no account.

In the app it appears as PROTO:COLORGEN, with three tools behind the tabs at the top: Palette, UV Checker, and Grid. They share one workspace, one undo stack, and one export button, and the palette you build in the first is available as a color source in the other two.

Nothing is uploaded. Palettes are generated in the browser from HSL math, and images you import are read locally. Your work is saved to browser storage as you go, so a reload picks up where you left off.

What you get

  • Seven harmony algorithms. Monochromatic through Tetradic, plus Color Ramps for stepped shading ramps — see the Palette tool.
  • Up to eight seed colors, each lockable. Lock the two you've committed to and re-roll the rest with R.
  • Palettes out of anything. Drop in a screenshot and it extracts the colors, or read a .hex, .gpl, .ase, .aco, .txt or .json file literally — import details.
  • A UV checker built for readability. Cell labels, direction arrows, microgrid, and five built-in palettes including the classic Normals ramp — details.
  • Prototype grid textures at true scale. Set the tile to a real-world size, get 50 cm and 25 cm subdivisions, corner marks, and a texel-density readout against the 512 px/m most engines target — details.
  • Color-blindness preview with a fix button. Simulate four vision types, see which pairs collapse into each other, and let it nudge them apart.
  • Exports the Blender add-on reads natively. PNG atlases at the add-on's own sizes, plus JSON, SVG, HEX, GPL and CSS — details.
  • Shareable links. One click copies a URL that rebuilds the palette or the texture setup on the other end.
