Camera tool

The camera tool turns the viewer into a small studio: set a focal length, pick a frame, compose against guides, and capture a PNG.

It lives behind the Developer toggle in Settings ▸ Viewport, and it's desktop only — framing a shot needs a pointer and screen space.

Field of view

FOV runs from 10° to 120°, defaulting to 40°.

Long lenses — 20–30° — compress a car and keep its proportions honest, which is why product shots use them. Wide angles exaggerate the nearest corner; useful for drama, misleading for reference.

Frame

Set a width and height directly, or pick an aspect and let it size itself. Resolution ranges from 512×192 to 1920×1080, defaulting to the full 1920×1080.

PresetRatio

2.39:1 scopeAnamorphic, cinematic
16:10
3:235mm still
4:3
1:1 squareSocial
9:16 portraitPhone, stories

Each preset picks the largest resolution with that ratio fitting inside the 1920×1080 ceiling. A custom size that doesn't match a preset is shown as its decimal ratio, e.g. 1.63:1.

Actual size

By default the safe-zone frame is the largest rect of the target aspect that fits the viewport, so you compose against a scaled version of the shot.

Actual size shows the frame at its true monitor footprint instead — one image pixel to one device pixel, like an image viewer at 100%. Use it to judge how much detail actually survives at the output resolution. If the frame would be bigger than the pane, it falls back to the fitted rect, which is the same frame scaled down.

Either way the capture is WYSIWYG — the overlay and the crop are driven by the same measurement.

Guides

GuideDefault
Thirds — rule-of-thirds grid inside the frameon
Center — center cross and dotoff
Diagonals — corner-to-corner dotted diagonalsoff

Guide color switches between black and white. Black is the default because the stock backdrop is light, where white lines disappear. Flip it if you darken the background.

Capturing

Capture renders the current view at the requested resolution — not a screenshot of the viewport, so the output isn't limited by your window size — and hands back a PNG.

Transparent is on by default, producing straight-alpha PNGs that drop into a layout or a thumbnail sheet without a background to mask out. Turn it off and the viewport's backdrop color is composited in behind the model.

Camera presets

Save the current camera and come back to it later. A preset is a complete shot recipe, not just a position — it stores:

  • Camera position and target
  • Whether the view was perspective or orthographic
  • The FOV it was framed with
  • The frame width and height

Applying one restores all of it, because composition depends on the frame as much as on where the camera stands. Presets saved before frame recording existed leave your current frame alone rather than guessing.

This is what makes a consistent set possible: shoot every car in a lineup from the identical three-quarter angle at the identical focal length, and the set reads as a set.

Next: settings.
